Microsoft overshadowed Google this week in their respective announcements of new AI search technologies, according to Bank of America strategists.

 They still made the case that Google could maintain dominance in the long run, given that it has worked on AI for years and "likely has superior AI technology for search, or at least better data to drive better results."


  • On Tuesday. Microsoft unveiled its new Bing search engine and Edge browser powered by AI, causing both app downloads to skyrocket in popularity.
  • A day later, Google briefly showed off its Bard chatbot during a live-streamed presentation, though it did not reveal when the AI tech would be integrated into its search function.
  • Google also lost $100B in market value on Wednesday, largely attributed to an inaccurate response that Bard gave in an advertising demo.
  • Given Microsoft's success this week, the BofA strategists acknowledged that AI-powered Bing could help it gain some of Google's 83.84% market share in search.
  • Despite this, the analysts believe "Google's big reveal [in AI] is still to come, which we would expect in weeks and not months."
