Dave Chappelle won the Best Comedy Album Emmy award on Sunday for his 2021 Netflix special "The Closer.
" A number of jokes from the special -- including a segment in which the comedian defends homophobic comments made by rapper DaBaby and declares himself "Team TERF" -- prompted backlash upon release, and resulted in a walkout by Netflix employees.
- Chappelle did not attend the Grammy ceremony; presenter Babyface accepted the award on his behalf.
- Louis CK -- who has admitted to claims of sexual misconduct by multiple women -- won the Best Comedy Album Grammy last year, and was again nominated this year.
- Following the CK and Chappelle nominations, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. told The Hollywood Reporter: "We don't control who the voters vote for. If the voters feel like a creator deserves a nomination, they're going to vote for them."
- "The Closer" wrapped up a $60 million Netflix deal with Chappelle for four comedy specials; the comedian and streamer renewed the deal in February 2022, with an agreement to produce four more specials.
