The German conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party has won elections in Berlin in a rerun of the 2021 election that was thrown out by the city's court.
The result is a blow for German chancellor Olaf Scholz and his Social Democrats (SPD) party, who had governed Germany's capital for the last 22 years.
- Sunday's election was the party's worst performance in Berlin since World War II, German TV reports.
- The Council of Europe election observers monitored the polls in Berlin on Sunday.
- It was the first time in Germany's postwar history that a regional election had to be repeated.
- The CDU may have trouble forming a government in Berlin because other big parties don't want to team up with it.
- According to Franziska Giffey, the mayor of Berlin and an SPD member, Berliners "want something else."
