Flights have been canceled and more than 36 schools and universities across Auckland, New Zealand, will close Monday as the city braces for Cyclone Gabrielle. 

There was no formal order from the Ministry of Education, but the schools decided to close anyway. 


  • Air New Zealand announced canceling several international fights on Monday and Tasman and Pacific Island flights.
    • It will also cancel its domestic services in and out of Auckland. 
  • Winds have already been recorded over the North Island on Sunday, reaching as high as 140 kph (87 mph).
  • In Northland, a state of emergency was declared Sunday for seven days as part of the regional response to Gabrielle. 
  • The InterCity bus network in Auckland will also limit its services.
  • Auckland is still recovering from flooding during record rainfall last month.


  • Norfolk Island, located north of New Zealand and south of New Caledonia, is working to clear trees and debris from the roads and restore power after Gabrielle hit.
