GitHub, GitLab, and GoDaddy are laying off employees

According to a report by Fortune, GitHub is laying off around 10% of its 3,000-strong workforce by the end of this year.

Also, GitLab and GoDaddy officially announced they are laying off 7% and 8% of their staff.

  • GitHub is going fully remote and is closing down all its offices at the end of their respective leases because of low utilization.
  • To cut operational costs, GitHub is moving laptop refreshes from three to four years and moving to Microsoft Teams for video conferencing.
  • GitLab CEO Sid Sijbrandji cited companies spending less on software purchases due to the current challenging macroeconomic environment as the reason for layoffs.
  • GoDaddy's U.S. employees are the most impacted by the layoff affecting multiple levels and every division.
