IBM acquired Santa Clara, California-based startup StepZen for an undisclosed sum. With the acquisition, the technology giant will be able to provide enterprise customers with a GraphQL API tool to help them pull data from various cloud and on-premise environments.

  • GraphQL was developed as an API management tool at Facebook.
  • The team behind Apigee — which Google acquired for $625M in 2016 — founded StepZen in 2020.
  • The acquisition is IBM's first this year and 30th since CEO Arvind Krishna took over the reins in April 2020.
  • The firm has raised $8M in total funding to date, all of which came through a seed round in December 2020.
  • Wing Venture Capital and Neotribe Ventures provided the funding.
