IBM announces AI supercomputer

IBM announced Vela, its AI supercomputer on its public cloud service.

As of right now, Vela is only available to IBM researchers, who can use it to develop, tune, and train AI foundation models.

  • While IBM began using Vela in May, it only announced the machine to the public this week.
  • The 60-rack AI supercomputer in the cloud is powered by Nvidia A100 Tensor Core GPUs.
  • IBM scientists and engineers have used the machine to better understand foundation models, such as DALL-E and GPT-3, which are trained on vast amounts of unlabeled data and can be fine-tuned for a variety of downstream tasks.
  • IBM said Vela is natively integrated into its cloud VPC environment, enabling AI workloads to use its more than 200 cloud services.
