In a Monmouth University poll

In a Monmouth University poll, fewer than 10% of respondents said they believe AI will do "more good than harm" in society.

Just over 40% of the respondents believe AI technology will ultimately harm society. About half, or 46%, said they believe AI will do equal amounts of good and harm.

  • Meanwhile, 55% said they are somewhat or very concerned that AI could eventually pose a risk to humans.
  • Separately, about 60% said they had heard of ChatGPT, the AI chatbot software created by OpenAI.
  • Just over 70% believe AI programs such as ChatGPT will be used to write whole news articles.
  • Nearly 80% believe that this would be a bad thing.
  • Overall, 91% of the respondents had heard of AI technology, an increase of 21 points since 2015.
  • Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, concluded that most Americans are "skeptical" that AI is good, even though many people regularly use some form of technology.
