Investors own almost a quarter of Ontario's total housing

 

Statistics Canada data revealed investors own almost a quarter (24%) of all housing in Ontario and around 32% of homes built after 2016. 

 Statistics Canada analyzed tax data to estimate the percentage of investor-owned homes in 2020. 


  • The scenario is similar in B.C., where investors own 25% of all housing and 38% of homes built after 2016. 
  • In Manitoba and Nova Scotia, investors owned 24.1% and 35% of homes of total housing, respectively. This number increased to 42% and 39% for new homes. 
  • Investor activity is concentrated on condos. Investors own 56% of new condos in Ontario and 49% in B.C. 
  • According to Better Dwelling, the insights are from 2020 data, and the trend has likely accelerated.
