The Hawaii State Senate unanimously approved

The Hawaii State Senate unanimously approved a pair of bills investigating the therapeutic potential of MDMA and psilocybin as alternatives for treating mental health conditions.

Both measures received support from the Governor’s office and headed to the Senate floor.

  • Bill SB 1531 aims to create a “beneficial treatments advisory council” responding to the Governor’s Office of Wellness and Resiliency (OWR).
    • The bill notes that psilocybin and MDMA have been designated as breakthrough therapies by the FDA.
  • Bill SB1454 would direct a new working group to analyze the "effects of psilocybin to treat conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and end-of-life psychological distress.”
  • Bills to legalize marijuana in Hawaii were approved in a Senate committee last week, while medical marijuana was legalized in 2000.
  • Most states of the U.S. will legalize psychedelics by 2037, the American Medical Association journal reported last month.
