The Pew Research Center surveyed more than 11,000 Americans about their thoughts on various AI applications, including models that generate images and text. The think tank found that "Americans make clear distinctions about the value they see from these developments."

Of respondents who had heard about AI news article generation, 16% thought it was a major advance for media, and 45% thought it wasn't an advancement.

  • Among those who had heard about AI text-to-image creators, such as DALL-E, 31% called it a major advance for visual arts, and 39% thought it was minor.
  • In cases of AI predicting cell protein structures, such as AlphaFold, nearly 60% said it was a major advance for medical research, versus 27% who said it was minor.
  • As noted by Pew, many respondents were not sure whether the technologies were an advance or not, showing that people are still forming opinions as the AI tech progresses.
