The University of Hong Kong became the latest higher education institute to bar students from using ChatGPT and other AI tools over plagiarism and other concerns.

Students may request exemptions but will need to get written permission from their teachers, the university said.

  • The University of Hong Kong is the first in the city to temporarily bar AI-generating tools to assist in coursework.
  • Next week, a committee at the Chinese University of Hong Kong will discuss its own AI policies and could take similar action.
  • Elsewhere, RV University in Bengaluru, India, and Science Po University in Paris, France, have banned the use of ChatGPT.
  • Today, San Francisco Bay University (SFBU) said it has a formal working group to find solutions to "responsibly incorporate ChatGPT into higher education" and prevent its misuse.
  • SFBU faculty member Henry Chang said he thinks it's "unrealistic" to ban ChatGPT outright. Instead, he said it's better to educate students on how to use ChatGPT responsibly and use it to improve teaching methods.
