The U.S. capacity to generate renewable energy shot up last year, and red states lead in solar and wind power production, according to a new report by Climate Central.

The report comes as the Biden administration approves billions of dollars for renewable energy projects, marking the country’s most significant initiative yet to fight the climate crisis.

The report reveals that Iowa and Oklahoma, with Republican governors and majority Republican state legislatures, lead the nation in wind power production.

    • California and Florida were the largest producers of solar power.
    • Texas is a leader in both solar and wind power.
  • The share of wind energy more than doubled, from 15% to 34%, while gas production has fallen from 49% to 34% over the last five years.
  • The Biden administration has committed to getting the U.S. to net-zero emissions by 2050.
