A new poll by the University of North Florida (UNF) found that 70% of Floridians support a proposed constitutional amendment to legalize recreational marijuana.
The
proposed initiative called the "Adult Personal Use of Marijuana" would
allow individuals over 21 to purchase a limited amount of marijuana for
personal use.
- Supporters of the measure
argue that it would generate significant tax revenue for the state of
Fla. and reduce nonviolent drug offenders.
- The measure still
needs to undergo a lengthy validation process, requiring 891,589 valid
signatures to appear on the 2024 ballot.
- The Smart & Safe Florida PAC, funded by Trulieve, filed the initiative in August 2022.
- Opponents argue that it would lead to increased drug use and addiction.
- They also argue that recreational marijuana legalization would have negative public health consequences.
- On March 3, Sen. Victor Torres filed a 135-page bill in the Florida Senate seeking to legalize marijuana for adult use.
