Amazon faces lawsuit for Just Walk Out tech

A class action lawsuit was filed against Amazon on Thursday.

The suit alleges that the company broke New York City laws by using "Just Walk Out" technology in stores without informing customers.

  • The lawsuit alleges that Amazon Go convenience stores broke NYC law by failing to post signage informing customers that facial recognition technology will be used.
  • Facial recognition forms part of Amazon's "Just Walk Out" technology, which allows customers to select items from stores and walk out without proceeding through a conventional checkout process.
  • The e-commerce giant makes use of the technology in its Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go outlets.
  • The lawsuit notes that Amazon did eventually put up signs but argues that they were installed over a year after New York City passed the biometric data disclosure law.
