Apple supplier Foxconn plans to build a new factory in India, where it will produce Apple AirPods for the first time, sources told Reuters.
The Taiwanese contract manufacturer reportedly plans to invest over
$200M on a new AirPods assembly plant in India's southern Telangana
state.
- Foxconn currently assembles 70%
of all iPhones. While the manufacturer was hesitant about taking on
AirPods, it ultimately decided to move forward in order to "reinforce
engagement" with Apple, a source said.
- Construction on the AirPods facility could begin later this year, with production starting in late 2024 or later.
- Neither Foxconn nor Apple has confirmed the news.
- Another Apple supplier, Jabil, recently started manufacturing AirPods components in India as part of Apple's efforts to shift production outside of China.
- It was the first time an India-based Apple supplier has manufactured parts for a device other than the iPhone.
- Chinese
supplier Luxshare Precision Industry Co. has also gained clearance from
the Indian government to locally produce the earphones.
