The U.K. government has released a white paper outlining its plans for a flexible and light-handed approach to AI regulation.
The Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology is asking for feedback on the plans up until June 21.
- The white paper outlines proposals for rolling out "a pro-innovation approach to AI regulation," according to the agency.
- It called AI "one of the five technologies of tomorrow," adding that it contributes £3.7B ($4.56B) to the U.K.'s economy.
- The proposals in the paper are intended to support "the right environment for artificial intelligence to flourish safely in the U.K."
- The government says it's avoiding stricter regulations that could end up stifling innovation, noting that a "patchwork of legal regimes" can cause businesses to be held back from realizing AI at its full potential.
- In addition to outlining this adaptable approach, the U.K. government says it will allow its individual regulators, like its Competition and Markets Authority and Equality and Human Rights Commission, to develop their own approaches to AI regulation for their sectors.
- The paper lays out five principles that it wants the regulators to consider in the process, which include AI safety, security, transparency, fairness, accountability, contestability, and others.
