ChatGPT experiences outage

OpenAI's ChatGPT appears to be back online after experiencing a widespread outage on Monday.

According to status.openai.com, a failed database migration may have caused the outage, which affected both paid and free users around the world.

OpenAI first reported the ChatGPT outage at roughly 10 a.m. PT. Many users reported seeing the message "ChatGPT is at capacity right now."

  • About four hours later, the chatbot service was back online.
  • On the status tracker, OpenAI stated that "the issue has been identified and a fix has been deployed," and it continues to monitor the issue to make sure "the site recovers completely."

Some ChatGPT users also reported being able to view the conversation histories of other users, which could have security and privacy implications.

  • OpenAI has not yet commented on that issue.
