Colorado has passed Proposition 122, a law legalizing natural psychedelic medicine, which creates a framework for a "Regulated Natural Medicine Access Program" that people over the age of 21 can access.

By Jan. 1, 2024, regulators must develop rules governing the manufacturing, cultivation, and sale of natural medicines, starting with psilocybin and psilocin (commonly known as "'shrooms" or "magic mushrooms")

The law will allow a Natural Medicine Advisory Board to advise regulators on implementing the program, Reuters reports.

  • Other rules include provisions for social equity license components and limitations on financial interests in Healing Centers.
  • Prop. 122 also seeks to decriminalize personal use, possession, growth, and transport of natural medicines, including psilocybin and psilocin, and protections for those engaging in private use.

The elephant in the room remains the federal government's position, as legalizing these substances may still violate federal law.
