Founders Fund slows investments to a halt

 

Peter Thiel's Founders Fund participated in three funding rounds worth $200M in the current quarter to date, per Crunchbase. This is a change of pace for the firm that participated in 121 rounds totaling over $10B in 2021. Just last week, the firm halved the size of the eighth fund from $1.8B to $900M, stashing away nearly $1B for the subsequent ninth fund. 

  • Founders Fund reduced its deal count by a third in 2022, participating in 80 rounds worth $6.6B. 
  • The most notable deal that Founders Fund participated in during 2022 was defense and security firm Anduril's $1.5B Series E round led by Valor Equity Partners. 
  • The firm slowed its deal count significantly in the second half of 2022, making only 32 investments. 
  • The slowed pace has trickled into the first quarter of 2023. 
  • Founders Fund is sitting on a significant amount of dry powder after closing a $1.9B early-stage and a $3.4B growth-stage fund.
