The city of Oakland, California, is suffering a major data leak after being hacked last month.
The Play ransomware group is suspected to be the threat actor behind the attack.
- Oakland
has yet to officially state what kind of files the hackers managed to
steal, but it is likely that the personal information of the
municipality's employees is part of that data.
- The Play hacker group is believed to have already begun releasing the stolen files in specific online forums.
- The
breach, which occurred on Feb. 8, 2023, forced Oakland to shut down all
of its non-emergency systems. Most of these services have yet to be
activated.
- Other services that were affected include:
- Business Tax Online Payments system,
- parking citation payment processing,
- permit application processing, etc.
