Robert Costello, an ally of Donald Trump, is expected to testify before a grand jury in New York today.
The
New York attorney is likely to argue that criminal charges should not
be brought against the former U.S. president in relation to a hush money
payment made to pornographic actress Stormy Daniels in 2016.
- Trump was recently invited to testify before a grand jury, an offer often given to potential defendants before they are indicted in New York.
- The invitation relates to an investigation into a $130,000 payment made to Daniels by Trump's former fixer, Michael Cohen.
- Cohen was given a three-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to charges relating to the payment, which he said was intended to keep Daniels quiet about her alleged affair with Trump.
- Trump on Saturday said he expects to be arrested on Tuesday as prosecutors consider criminal charges in relation to the payment.
- Costello
was asked by the Manhattan district attorney’s office to testify after
he claimed to have information that casts doubt on the credibility of
Cohen, one of the investigation's key witnesses.
- Costello has represented other Trump allies, including Steve Bannon and Rudy Giuliani.
