The U.S. carried out air strikes that killed 14 pro-Iran fighters in eastern Syria.
The attacks on Thursday night came in response to an earlier drone strike that killed an American army contractor and injured five U.S. service personnel.
According to U.S. intelligence, the drone that hit a maintenance facility in a coalition base near Hasakah, Syria, "was of Iranian origin."
- The groups that were targeted by the air strikes are believed to have links to the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
- The IRGC is believed to provide material support to Shia militias in eastern Syria and Iraq.
Roughly 900 U.S. troops are operating out of coalition bases in southern and eastern Syria as part of the fight against the Islamic State.
