A U.S. black couple settled their lawsuit against a real estate appraiser that gave a lower valuation to their Northern California home.
The settlement amount was not disclosed.
The couple accused the Miller and Perotti Real Estate Appraisers of bringing down their Marin City home's value by $500,000.
- The lawsuit said the appraiser assessed the property to be worth around $1M, and when a white friend pretended to be its owner, another appraiser valued it at around $1.5M.
- The defendants agreed to watch a documentary about discriminatory real estate and attend a training session on the history of racial discrimination in real estate.
- According to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, 92.4% of home appraisers are white.
