Akamai upgrades Connected Cloud

Massachusetts-based content delivery network (CDN) provider Akamai has equipped its Connected Cloud platform with a slew of additional capabilities that facilitate data exchange and enable more content personalization, rights management, and security. Akamai announced the new platform upgrades at NAB 2023 in Las Vegas.

  • Akamai debuted Connected Cloud in Feb. 2023 following its $900M acquisition of cloud-hosting provider Linode.
  • Connected Cloud is a massively distributed edge and cloud platform for cloud computing, content delivery, and security.
  • Among the new platform features is enhanced support for the Consumer Technology Association’s CMCD specification, which allows device-based media players to send playback information to Akamai and other CDNs.
  • The company has expanded use cases to its EdgeWorkers serverless computing capabilities that are centered on content personalization, rights management, and security for streaming video and include the following:
    • Reduced storage requirements and costs for operators.
    • Faster, more flexible deployment of pre-delivery content stitching for live and on-demand video.
    • The ability to track and mitigate video piracy with A/B content watermarking that adheres to the DASH Industry Forum (DASH-IF) specification.
