Amazon Prime is set to premiere its first original African movie.
The
e-commerce giant is working to boost its streaming operations on the
African continent, which has the fastest-growing and youngest population
in the world.
- The movie, called
"Gangs of Lagos," will premiere in Nigeria on Thursday ahead of its
release on Amazon's streaming platform the following day.
- The film, shot in Nigeria's largest city, will premiere in London and New York later this month.
- Directed
and produced by Nigerian filmmaker Jade Osiberu, "Gangs of Lagos" tells
the story of childhood friends trying to make their way in a busy and
challenging neighborhood.
- Osiberu's Greoh Studios agreed to an
exclusive deal with Prime, which began operating in Africa alongside
Amazon Studios in 2016.
- Prime Video rolled out a local version
of its service for the Nigerian market in 2021 and has signed licensing
deals with several local producers, including Inkblot and Anthill
Studios.
