Amazon Web Services (AWS) says it will invest over $13B in Australia over the next five years.
The
company plans to continue growing its cloud computing business in
Melbourne and Sydney and transition its data centers to renewable
energy.
- In 2012, AWS launched its first Australian cloud region in Sydney and has invested $9.2B in the project since.
- In Jan., the cloud giant opened its second Australian cloud infrastructure region in Melbourne.
- The
company predicts that its planned $13B investment in the expansion and
operation of the two data centers will create 11,000 full-time jobs,
ranging from direct employees, contractors, construction workers,
maintenance workers, engineers, and suppliers.
- Amazon has set a goal
of running its data centers on 100% renewable energy by 2025 and has
two solar farms in New South Wales that support its Australian cloud
infrastructure regions. The company also has a wind farm underway in
Victoria that will also be used to power its data centers.
