China’s second-largest cloud provider, announced on WeChat

Tencent Cloud, China’s second-largest cloud provider, announced on WeChat that its self-developed ‘Canghai’ video transcoding chip is now being mass-produced and supports use cases for cloud gaming and live video streaming.

The tech giant claims it has already produced “tens of thousands of chips.”

  • Tencent first debuted its Cangai chips in Nov. 2021
  • According to its post on WeChat, the Cangai chips can enhance picture quality while reducing the costs and delays associated with video encoding and decoding.
  • The Cangai chips purport to carry out high-precision motion search, full-rate distortion optimization, and high-efficiency adaptive quantization and can integrate Tencent Cloud software.
  • The company claims its chips meet the requirements of high throughput, low latency, and real-time performance.
  • U.S. sanctions have prompted Chinese companies to develop custom chips for China to launch its own semiconductor industry.
