U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas reportedly failed to disclose lavish trips and expensive gifts provided by conservative donors over the past decade.
Thomas'
failure to disclose the gifts, which were worth tens of thousands of
dollars, could potentially be a violation of federal ethics rules.
- ProPublica reported that Thomas benefitted from the largesse of GOP donor and real estate magnate Harlan Crow.
- Thomas and his wife, conservative activist Ginni Thomas, have traveled to exotic destinations on Crow's megayacht and private jet for years.
- Crow's
lakeside resort in the Adirondacks features a painting depicting Crow
and Thomas smoking cigars alongside Federalist Society leader Leonard Leo and other conservative activists.
- The
ProPublica report cites a review of Thomas' financial disclosure forms,
which do not include gifts from Crow and other wealthy donors.
- The
report also notes that Thomas failed to disclose travel expenses and
other perks provided by conservative groups, including a $7,500 gift
from Charles Koch.
- In 2011, Politico reported that Crow gave half a million dollars to a Tea Party group founded by Ginni Thomas. The group paid Ginni Thomas a $120,000 salary.
- Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said that Thomas should be impeached for his "shocking" corruption.
