COCKLEBUR EXTRACTS HAVE SHOWN POTENTIAL IN SKIN PROTECTION, WOUND HEALING, AND COMBATING WRINKLES DUE TO THEIR ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY PROPERTIES. RESEARCHERS DISCOVERED THAT THESE EXTRACTS REDUCED UVB DAMAGE AND PROMOTED WOUND HEALING.

Cocklebur extracts have the potential to protect the skin, accelerate wound healing, and combat wrinkles due to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Researchers discovered that these extracts reduced UVB damage and promoted wound healing in laboratory tests while influencing collagen production, which maintains skin elasticity.

The new research was presented at Discover BMB, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology annual meeting, in Seattle March 25-28.

  • Cocklebur has been used for centuries in traditional medicines for various illnesses.
  • The fruit of the cocklebur plant, often considered a noxious weed, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory components that could make it useful as a skin protectant.
  • The cocklebur extracts also appear to influence the production of collagen, a protein that gives skin elasticity and prevents wrinkles.
    • Cocklebur could be a valuable ingredient in cosmetic products, especially when combined with compounds like hyaluronic acid or retinoic acid.
  • High doses of cocklebur fruit extract can be harmful, and further research is needed to determine how to use it safely in cosmetic or pharmaceutical applications.

Zoom Out:

  • The researchers plan to further study the biological mechanisms involved and conduct experiments to safely adapt cocklebur fruit extracts for use in cosmetic products.
  • This research was supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) grant funded by the Korean government.
