Diageo is using drones to improve farming efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in its tequila farming operations in Jalisco, Mexico.
The
beverage giant is extending its use of drones after a successful pilot
to collect data on agave plants for better farming decisions, reduced
resource use, and decreased carbon emissions.
- The
drones can identify the agave plants that need attention and dispense
the required amount of a unique water fertilizer mix, reducing the use
of resources and vehicles.
- The data collection has helped agave
planters to make better decisions on resource use and the best time of
day to water the plants, leading to a 2/3 reduction in water use.
- Using drones has also resulted in fewer tractors needing to be driven across the farmland, reducing carbon emissions.
- Diageo’s
efficiency and precision agriculture efforts contribute to its 2030 ESG
action plan, which includes reducing water use in water-stressed
areas.
- The initiative brings additional capabilities for
Diageo's team, new opportunities for the local community, and
contributes to a more sustainable world.
- Diageo's
tequila business grew 28% in the half-year results released in January,
thanks in part to the efficiency and precision agriculture efforts from
using drones.
