E-commerce sales by channel

What the numbers say: Online marketplaces accounted for the largest amount (35%) of e-commerce sales worldwide in 2022. The next most used e-commerce channel listed by survey participants was "other" (22%), with supermarket websites (17%) coming a distant third.

Relevance: Online sales have the potential to drive growth for industries that can find ways to boost their share of e-commerce transactions. The total value of retail e-commerce sales worldwide rose above $5.2B in 2021 and is projected to reach about $7.5B by 2025. Many retailers have established or upgraded e-commerce and omnichannel capabilities since the pandemic, while D2C firms represented 13% of all U.S. e-commerce businesses in 2022. However, dedicated e-commerce platforms, like Amazon, continue to attract the largest share of online transactions.

Brands that should care: Physical retailers, D2C brands, and digitally native companies may benefit from considering whether partnerships with larger e-commerce platforms could generate more online sales.
