German creatives oppose generative AI

42 associations of German writers, designers, and other creatives have asked the EU to roll out  stronger regulations for generative AI like ChatGPT.

The groups said that generative AI technologies should be liable for possible infringement of personal rights and copyrights.

  • They sent a letter to the European Commission, European Council, and members of the European Parliament.
  • The groups represent more than 140,000 German authors, photographers, designers, journalists, illustrators, and performers.
  • The letter said that generative AI's "unauthorized usage of protected training material" and the "foreseeable substitution of the sources by the output of generative AI" need to be addressed "before irreversible harm occurs."
  • The letter said that a focus on "generative AI needs to be at the center of any meaningful AI market regulation.

  • The Commission proposed AI regulations in 2022 and will work out the final details with EU legislators and member states this year.
