Convictions expunged in Michigan

Nearly 850,000 people in Michigan had convictions expunged last week thanks to the bipartisan "Clean Slate" program.

On April 11, the first day that the program went into effect, nearly 1.2 million low-level nonviolent offenses were expunged.

  • There are ~2.8 million people in Michigan with criminal records.
  • The expungements will make it easier for many to find employment and housing.
  • The program relies on an algorithm to find convictions that are eligible for expungement in a database.
  • The Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce said the expungements will help local businesses with "thousands of job openings to fill."
