leading ai unicorns in china

What happened: ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, has tapped former Alibaba AI head Yang Hongxia to oversee its AI lab and lead its team developing an AI model capable of language generation.

Details: Yang previously oversaw the team behind Alibaba's AI multi-modal M6 model. Her appointment, in which she reports directly to ByteDance vice president Yang Zhenyuan, comes only days before Alibaba started testing its own Tongyi Qianwen AI chatbot with customers.

Why it matters: China-based ByteDance is the latest tech giant to dedicate more manpower to AI. Its in-house large language model is expected to make its way to TikTok and the Chinese version, Douyin.

What the numbers say: ByteDance is by far China's biggest unicorn by market valuation, so its large language model is sure to have plenty of talent and resources to give it an edge in China's generative AI wars.
