Taiwan responded critically to French President Emmanuel Macron's call for Europe to become a "third pole" in global geopolitics.
Taiwan's parliament speaker You Si-kun asked on Tuesday if France remained committed to its founding principles of liberty, egalitarianism, and fraternity.
- Macron said
during a trip to China that the EU's response to tensions surrounding
Taiwan should not be led by "American rhythm and a Chinese
overreaction."
- He also said that Europe should not side with the U.S. or China but instead become a "third pole" in world geopolitics.
- Taiwan
parliament speaker You Si-kun published a Facebook post asking whether
"advanced democratic countries ignore the lives and deaths of people in
other countries?"
- He added that he was "puzzled" by Macron's comments.
- Macron's trip was intended to strengthen EU ties with China.
