Madonna's
1984 album "Like a Virgin" and Mariah Carey's 1994 holiday classic "All
I Want For Christmas Is You" will be added to the U.S. National Recording Registry.
The
Library of Congress said that a total of 25 albums, singles, or sound
artifacts making up some of "the defining sounds of the nation’s history
and culture" will be included in the registry.
- The original 1985 theme from Super Mario Bros. will be the first piece of video game music added to the Registry.
- The
1989 Queen Latifah album "All Hail the Queen" will also be included,
and Queen Latifah will be the first female rapper with a recording added
to the registry.
- Other albums that will be added are:
- Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young's 1970 album “Déjà Vu”
- The Police's 1983 album "Synchronicity"
- Jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis' 1985 album "Black Codes (From the Underground)."
- Some of the iconic singles that will be added to the registry this year are:
- John Lennon's "Imagine" (1971)
- Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" (1971)
- John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Roads" (1971)
- Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" (1983)
- The National Recording Registry was established in 2000 to serve as a repository of music and sound recordings that "are culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States."
