According to data from market research group Kantar, Netflix lost over 1 million users in Spain during the first three months of 2023.
The drop was likely linked to new, stricter regulations around password sharing, which were introduced in a number of countries and territories around the world -- including Spain -- earlier this year.
In February, Netflix Spain added a €5.99 ($6.57) fee for users who shared their log-in details with an additional household.
- According to Kantar, around two-thirds of the users who dropped off the service since then were using other people's passwords.
- While many of these users weren't paying for the service, and thus won't impact revenue, this will lead to a dip in overall viewership for Netflix content.
- According to Netflix, around 100 million users internationally rely on borrowed accounts.
