New Canadian streaming law

Canada's Online Streaming Act has officially gone into effect.

Streaming services -- including Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+ -- will now be regulated and overseen in a manner similar to the country's broadcast and cable networks.

International streamers will now be required to hit quotas for supporting original, native Canadian productions.

  • The bill has both received final approval from the country's Senate, and received royal assent.
  • The bill was introduced with support from the government of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau; YouTube was among the streamers that spoke out against the proposal.
