Nine Republican U.S. senators have written a letter to the Biden administration, calling for sanctions to be imposed on several Chinese cloud providers due to national security concerns.
The letter was led by Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) and addressed to the U.S. Commerce, State, and Treasury departments.
- The
senators allege that Chinese cloud computing companies "are
increasingly engaging with foreign entities — in some cases sanctioned
foreign entities that are directly challenging the national security and
economic security interests of the United States and our allies and
partners."
- In the letter, the senators note that Huawei Cloud's "Sky Computing Constellation"
involved a co-sponsorship with Changsha Tianyi Space Science and
Technology Research Institute, also known as "Spacety China," which has
been sanctioned by the Treasury Department for providing satellite
imagery to Russian entities.
- Senators
Thom Tillis, Marco Rubio, Steve Daines, Ted Cruz, Joni Ernst, Katie
Britt, Kevin Cramer, and Dan Sullivan signed off on the letter.
- The
letter also urges the Biden administration to take action against
Alibaba Cloud, Baidu Cloud, and Tencent Cloud. The senators specifically
accuse Alibaba Cloud of having close ties with the Chinese
military-industrial complex.
