Paramount filed a counter-suit against Warner Bros. Discovery regarding the streaming rights to the animated Comedy Central series "South Park."
The new filing comes in response to a February lawsuit brought by WBD
against Paramount, alleging a breach of contract and asking for hundreds
of millions of dollars in compensation.
- Warner
alleges that, though it paid $500 million for the exclusive streaming
license to "South Park" episodes, Paramount produced new "South Park"
specials to promote its Paramount+ service.
- Warner's suit
claims that Paramount had initially proposed an alternate deal, in which
the two studios would share "South Park" rights, but that this proposal
was rejected.
- Paramount's countersuit denies the allegations and accuses WBD of withholding licensing fees that it owes for delivered "South Park" episodes.
- HBO
Max -- soon to relaunch as "Max" -- continues to feature the full run
of "South Park" TV episodes; Paramount+ has the rights to a handful
of exclusive, recent "South Park" specials.
