The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has hired Andrew Moore as its first-ever advisor for AI, cloud computing, and robotics.
Moore is the former VP of Google Cloud's AI division and the founder of the startup Lovelace AI.
- U.S. CENTCOM
is one of the eleven combatant commands in the U.S. Department of
Defense (DoD), and its area of responsibility includes the Middle
East, parts of Africa, Central Asia, and parts of South Asia.
- In
his new role, Moore will be tasked with enabling AI adoption,
implementing computer algorithms, collecting and structuring data,
incorporating new technologies, and leading various efforts related to
digital warfighting.
- Schuyler
Moore, the CTO of the U.S. CENTCOM, highlighted that Moore would work
on Global Information Dominance Experiments, which are run by the DoD's
Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO), and are an
initiative to fuse data integration systems with AI and ML technologies
for defense operations.
- CENTCOM's CTO emphasized that
appointing someone from the private sector is a strategic move because
"it is a talent that doesn't necessarily inherently exist within the
department… it's not one that we've invested in decades past, but it is
one that is increasingly, increasingly critical.”
