Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made his first "official" trip to Poland on Wednesday.
The
wide-ranging discussions between Zelensky and Polish President Andrzej
Duda were overshadowed by political controversy surrounding imports of
Ukrainian agricultural products.
- Discussions
between Zelensky and Duda focused on weapon donations, Ukraine's
relationship with the EU, and Ukraine's post-war reconstruction.
- Duda pledged to send more of Poland's MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine following an earlier promise to send four of the Soviet-era warplanes.
- They
also discussed an influx of Ukrainian agricultural products, a
controversial issue that prompted Poland's Agriculture Minister Henryk
Kowalczyk to resign on the same day that Zelensky arrived.
- Cheap Ukrainian agricultural produce flooded the Polish market after the EU lifted tariff duties on Ukrainian products in a bid to support the country's economy following Russia's invasion.
- Polish farmers have expressed opposition to the decision, which Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski said the EU should revise in December.
- Kowalczyk resigned as Poland's agriculture minister after the EU proposed to renew its suspension of tariffs on Ukrainian products for another year.
