YouTube TV hits 5 million subscribers: In July of 2022, YouTube TV announced that had surpassed 5 million paid subscribers and "trialers" -- that is, users who have officially signed up for a temporary "trial" of the service. This made it the largest "cable replacement" streaming service in the US, surpassing Hulu + Live TV, which reported around 4.1 million subs in April 2022. Overall cord-cutting: YouTube TV's growth mirrors so-called cord-cutting rates more generally. These refer to Americans that have entirely abandoned traditional cable and satellite TV subscriptions, and now exclusively rely on streaming services and the internet for TV viewing. According to data from TVTech, nearly 6 million American households canceled their cable TV subscriptions in 2022, up from 4.7 million households in 2021. Looking ahead: YouTube TV is now the exclusive home for the NFL Sunday Ticket package, which will likely bring in millions of additional subscribers. Sunday Ticket subscribers can sign up separately for the football games without needing to purchase a full YouTube TV subscription, but the addition is nonetheless guaranteed to bring a lot of additional attention and eyeballs to the service. |
