According to the World Health Organization, millions of people needing palliative care each year can benefit from alternative techniques like VR to improve their quality of life and reduce pain.

Around 56.8 million people require palliative care annually, with 25.7 million in their last year of life, according to the World Health Organization.

Palliative care providers adopt a multi-faceted approach, tailoring care packages to address various needs, including medical care, patient advocacy, and massage therapy.

  • VR has emerged as a promising technique in palliative care, allowing patients to immerse themselves in 360° views of preferred locations.
    • VR reportedly reduced chronic pain by 46% in an eight-week study and evoked feelings of joy and happiness among palliative care patients.
  • According to research, VR in palliative care also offers escapism, fulfilling bucket list experiences, and generating feelings of joy and happiness.

Virtual reality may also improve memory, tasking, and visual attention for those with cognitive impairment, according to a 2020 systematic review of the data.
