NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) is partnering with NVIDIA

NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) is partnering with NVIDIA and others to build a digital replica of Earth called the Earth Observation Digital Twin.

It uses AI technology and NVIDIA's Omniverse computing platform to analyze NOAA's massive datasets and display real-time findings.

NOAA is facing the challenge of consolidating and utilizing vast amounts of data collected from different sensors and formats across satellites.

  • The Earth Observation Digital Twin project aims to create a virtual model of Earth that can visualize and predict the behavior of physical objects and systems.
  • The initial focus of the project is on sea-surface temperature data, with plans to expand.
  • Currently, only 24% of federal agency leaders have reported experimenting with virtual models.
    • Digital twins, however, are expected to gain popularity among government organizations over time.

According to a report released in February 2023 by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), digital twins are being utilized in a wide range of applications, including supply chain optimization, agricultural management, and manufacturing.
