G7 officials to discuss AI

Officials from G7 governments, including the U.S. and EU, will convene on May 30 to discuss issues posed by generative AI tools.

During the inaugural working-level AI meeting of the intergovernmental "Hiroshima AI process," participants will address concerns related to disinformation and the governance of AI.

  • As the current chair of the G7, Japan will head up the discussions on the "responsive use" of generative AI technologies, according to Japan Communications Minister Takeaki Matsumoto.
  • The G7 AI working group aims to offer recommendations to heads of state by the end of 2023, he said.
  • The meeting comes after world leaders at last week's G7 Summit discussed the need for "guardrails" to regulate AI.
  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak were among the leaders who called for regulations to foster the safe and democratic development of AI.
  • Von der Leyen acknowledged that AI offers benefits to people and the economy, but guardrails are needed to regulate the development of AI in the EU, which is already working to hammer the world's first over-arching AI Law.
