ChatGPT mobile draws over 500k downloads

The news: OpenAI's new ChatGPT app for iOS topped 500,000 downloads within its first six days of its release, making it one of the best new mobile app debuts of 2022 and 2023, according to data.ai.

Background: The first official mobile app for ChatGPT launched in the U.S. on May 18 and is now available in 11 more countries, including the U.K., Brazil, South Korea, France, and Germany.

What the numbers say: After their respective February launches, Microsoft's AI-enabled Bing and Edge apps garnered 250,000 and 195,000 downloads across iOS in their best five-day periods. However, the ChatGPT app outperformed them, drawing 480,000 installs within the first five days of its iOS launch in the U.S.

Other competition: According to data.ai, OpenAI's ChatGPT app also outperformed most generic-named AI chatbot apps in the U.S., which have drawn users with names like "chatbot" and "GPT." Only one app, "Chat with Ask AI," surpassed it with 590,000 installs between April 4-8.

The bigger picture: ChatGPT also had the second-largest app launch this year and last, surpassed only by Truth Social, which tallied 630,000 downloads shortly after its debut. According to data.ai, only 1% of apps surpass 10,600 U.S. installs within their first five days, with the top 0.1% reaching 45,000 downloads. Meanwhile, the ChatGPT website reached an estimated 100 million monthly active users in only two months after its launch, making it among the fastest-growing apps in history.
