GOOD NEWS: A local diner offers free meals to hungry people in Berkeley, California.
The program was made official during the pandemic and now provides about 200 meals per month.
- Collin
Doran, the owner of the Homemade Cafe, said he started offering free
meals a few years ago to people who were asking customers for money or
food.
- "My reaction was: 'Hey, if you guys are hungry or in need of food, we will feed you,'" said Doran.
- He made the practice an official policy when food insecurity rose during the pandemic.
- Anyone can grab a coupon from the diner's bulletin board and receive a free meal.
- Many customers support the "Everybody Eats Program" by voluntarily adding $5 to their bill.
- "Even
if [customers] don't always contribute, they like the fact that we do
it and they choose to come here more often," Duran said.
