KPMG U.K. metaverse study

Almost half of U.K. consumers (47%) believe that the metaverse will be widely adopted within the next 10 years, according to a survey conducted by KPMG U.K.

The research revealed that opinions are divided, with over a third (37%) having a positive view of the metaverse, while just under a third (31%) hold negative opinions, and around a third (32%) are undecided or lack knowledge about it.

Global technology, media, and telecoms executives share a similar perspective to U.K. consumers, with 84% of respondents planning to increase or maintain their investments in the metaverse over the next five to 10 years, according to a separate KPMG study.

  • The main use cases of the metaverse are not expected to go mainstream for at least four years, and some executives anticipate it could take 10 years or longer.
  • The survey found that entertainment and education are the top two activities consumers would engage in within the metaverse.
  • The study also found that younger consumers are more optimistic about the metaverse, with two-thirds of 18- to 24-year-olds expressing a positive opinion.
  • Over 50% of consumers stated they would engage in virtual shopping to some extent.

Venture capitalist Matthew Ball first wrote about the metaverse in 2018, and his essays have become essential reading for those attempting to understand or profit from the network.
